MSc thesis project proposal

Polarimetric Detector at Super THz (>5 THz) Frequencies

Current state-of-the-art polarimetric observations at far infrared spectrum are based on the PRIMAger Polarimetric Imager (PPI) instrument which is under development for a future space-based observatory (PRIMA). PPI instrument will have lens-antenna coupled KIDs operating up to 3.8 THz. However, despite the scientific drive for operating PPI at even higher THz frequencies, antenna-based detectors imposes unachievable fabrication and assembly tolerances on the entire instrument limiting the PPI’s scope.

In this project, we will develop lens-absorber coupled KIDs with integrated polarisers to enable future space based polarimetric observations beyond PPI’s capabilities.

MSc thesis project:

•  Co-designing integrated polarizers with lens-absorbers at super THz frequencies.

•  Involvement with the cryogenic characterization of the detector module at SRON facilities.

•  Involvement with the polarimetric characterization of the detector module at SRON facilities.
